And whilst a Perth winter is pretty far from that of a the harsh chill of a New York one. I can't help but get excited to jacket weather to be back in full effect. The track perfectly captures that winter vibe, and the clip backs it up in perfectly capturing the vibes of music. Enjoy!

Jawn of The Week

Every now and then, I hear a track, that does the sample complete justice. It uses the borrowed sounds gracefully, and creates it's own entire persona. You may remember a favourite example of mine I posted last last year.

This track is an outro from the last track on Vlooper's latest release, Analog Love (I've cut straight to the beat on the link bellow to avoid any confusion). When I heard the first crackle come in, I knew this was going to be big, the warm sounds began to twinkle, synths began to mimic the love call of blue whales and the drums kicked in in true Vlooper style.
Then a quarter of the way in, a very familiar two piano chords joined the party, it was on the tip of my tongue, and then, as soon as the strings laid over the beat, I knew it was none other than Yusef Lateef's, "Like It Is". This song is my opinion of the perfect jazz song. Yusef Lateef is one of my favourite musicians, and this track never fails to mellow my mood.

The clip is cut from scene from King of New York, pretty apt if you ask me. Marc has one of the illest flows and slang drops around, holding that grimey NYC sound most thoroughly.

More DOOM shit. Of Course. Stretch Armstrong posted this a while back,
"In digging through the files, I did come across around twenty five MF Doom demos which he recorded at my house while resting there for a week or two in the mid to late 90's. Only one of these tracks, "The Elite Scooby Doo Shit" ever saw the light of day, and got a little burn on KCR, years before MF became one of the only real remaining dudes left in hip-hop."
What I wouldn't do to hear the other twenty four demos!

Also peep the Dead Bent 12" release put out on Fondle Em Records which has a couple early versions of tracks made most famous on Operations Doomsday. The productions is a little different, and you can certainly hear the difference in a young MF DOOM voice!

DOOM played his first show of his Aus/NZ tour in Wellington last night, and by most reports, the show was dope, the only complaints I could find were about the sound. Which, unfortunately, are a given at any Hip-Hop show other than The Roots, and if you're attending any DOOM show around the country, please come expecting over the top bass muffling out the already faint vocals. Or, alternatively, if you're a sound man for any of these shows. Please sort your shit out!

Either way, I'm amped to know that DOOM is actually playing shows in the flesh. I couldn't really careless what the sound is like. I'm excited enough to be in the same room as the guy.

Here's a CD recording from a live show at Planet X in '05, and whilst his voice now is a little raspier, and rhyme style less, playful (for lack of a better word).
It's certainly providing as good listenings, only a few days out from his show here in Perth.

Here we are with another track to keep your extra ears satisfied. I just peeped this guy after seeing a few blogs and message boards throwing up, so I thought it was time to catch wind on the situation.

Here we have is a big white guy, dropping New York slang rap, reminiscent of the Ghostface (almost identical at times), over some well selected mid 90's type instrumentals.
His gig is close to being a "Hip Hop Tribute Band" or certainly, at least heavily influenced by that sound that Ghost and dem pioneered.
But, it leaves me asking, do I care? and... I think I don't. Quite frankly, I enjoy this Mixtape better than Raekwon's new album, Shaolin Vs Wu-Tang. Could it be that I'm stuck in the 90's and will swallow anything that slightly reminds me of it? Well, yes. I'm not here to debate that. I'm here to bring you something pleasing to listen to.

Peep it for yourself, if you like that 90's New York sound (the sound made me fall in love with Hip-Hop in the first place), then it's hard to not enjoy this. You can buy his mixtape for $5 here.

Woah! This is the first track I've heard from Shlohmo since his Shlohmotion release of last year, and wow! The guy has certainly begun to perfect his own sound. This track is jaw droppingly beautiful. Layers of bass notes, smooth licks and those signature clicks and pops all hidden beneath a soothing hiss.
And that's all Sholohmo right there, the singing, guitar, bass and keys, all him! no samples! Dude's only 19 years old... I'm floored.

His upcoming EP, of the same name, drops this month, can't wait!

First up, thanks to Kuz for sending this new compilation by SOULECTION my way. It's filled with treats from some of the best "underground" heads of the "new beat" sound (has anyone actually coined a name for this type of sound yet?)

I guess it's just a modern progression of the Hip-Hop sound. Gone is the Breaks and Boom Bap! Say hello to the warm bass lines, pitched drums and especially trademark airy synths of today.

It's probably just a sign of the times. A time where around 90% of beat makers are using computer programs and midi controllers to craft their sound, which has resulted in an influx of very synthisized sounding music floating around from all parts of the globe, and by no means is this necessarily a bad thing.

It's very interesting to see how music sounds shape as technology changes. With programs like Fruity Loops, Ableton and Logic all so readily available to anyone with a MacBook and a Midi Controller. Making music is becoming easier and easier. And we're seeing more and more people that perhaps would never of tried their hand at making beats when it was all done on using Hardware and Records (the perhaps, less obtainable and accessable method), are now finding a far easier introduction to making music in this technological era we live in today.

Now-a-days you don't need the backing of a record label to have your music heard across the globe, and the listener is the winner here. We're hearing an abundance of great music and new artists emerge every day, many that perhaps would never have seen the light of day without the introduction of the internet and this some what more accessible platform to create music.

Which raises a question that has lingered in my head since I was a child.
How many people have an incredible talent sitting inside them, without them even know it? If you never try new things, you never know, what you might be superb at, or better yet, what you might really enjoy doing. (and this certainly doesn't just related to making music)

I mean, I could be the best Lacrosse player the world has ever seen, but how am I to know, being that I've never picked up a Lacrosse Stick in my life...

Are geniuses destined to be drawn towards their craft? Or is it pure luck that they happened to find it themselves?
Cliche as it may be, image if Dilla never touched an MPC? How many Jay Dee's are sitting dormant out there?

Sorry, I got a little phylosophical there! Back to the topic at hand of topic, here this week's Jawn by Portland based beat maker, Xperiment. This is the first time that I'd heard his music, and I wanted to pick someone different, rather than my usual go to's in Elaquent, BMB, or V Looper all who's music I have posted on here before.
This has that slow swag synth sound, the reppin' that "New Beat" sound I discussed above to a tee!

The synth and vocal sample at the start reminds me of what transworld used to do with Atiba / Muska beats in their "golden era" videos. Skateboarders will know what I'm talking about!

I first downloaded these songs by Street Connect in 1998 (56k where you at!?) I was about 11 years old, and it was one of the first Hip-Hop songs I ever got into. Since that day, I don't think I ever heard another song by then, nor have I since.
I'm not really quite sure what sparked my interest in Hip-Hop, I think perhaps I heard a few songs on Recovery or something (anyone remember that show?).
What ever it was, I remember Googling (or more realistically for the time, alta vista-ing) the words "Underground Hip-Hop" and wandering around some badly constructed Angelfire websites, without really knowing what I was looking for, and yet still I some how ended up downloading some (and even still looking back now) dope sounding Hip-Hop.

I can't help but think what I would turn out like if I never found Hip-Hop. Music really defines and shapes people. I truly believe that Hip-Hop really taught me a lot, still does... and I don't think I would be so open to other genres of music with out it's influence.

Excuse this little bit of nostalgia but, God bless Hip-Hop!

I've come back with few too many photos for me to post in one go, so here's Part I for your viewing pleasure. We arrived home from what was an incredible 8 day road trip through the south west of Western Australia yesterday evening. Visiting Bunbury, Busselton, Boyanup, Denmark, Margaret River, Nannup, Albany, Mt Barker & Kojonup. It was great getting out into the country towns some simple life for a while, but it sure is damn nice to come back to a shower, bed and internet!
Everyone was pretty stuffed and sun burnt. It was an amazing trip, filled with lots and lots of skateboarding, driving, sleeping and not sleeping, drinking and eating, adventuring and exploring and all round laughing and larking.

The gang didn't make it through without injury, we lost three fellow road trippers to injury, Reilly badly sprained his ankle in Bunbury pretty early in the trip, Quinten hurt his back in the tent scene then in similar fashion to Romney, injured his foot on the second last day, but worst of all, Ricky took a blow of bad luck and broke his wrist on the 2nd night in at Boyanup Bowl in most unfortunate circumstances. He spent two nights in hospital and came out the other side with a few new additions in the form of a metal plate and cast. But, in true Ricky style, it didn't hold him back, he joint us for the rest of the trip which was a sterling effort by any measures, and something I (and all) was extremely hyped for, because everyone knows Ricky can make a sesion!

Gotta give a big thanks to all of those who helped out along the way! especially The Watt Family, the Ahern Family, Rex, all the owners of the caravans parks for perhaps some what reluctantly taking on 20 semi-rowdy skateboarders, and especially, last but not least, Bowring for organising and executing it all, big love, much respect!

I remember hearing Little Brother's - The Listening for the very first time and feeling like Hip-Hop was in a pretty good place. It was my introduction to the incredible Phonte and 9th sure did his thing on the beats!
The track I selected this week is sampled on the song Home, from that very album (embedded bellow). There's this little section where the filter drops out and vocals really come through at about the 1.40 mark, and I had wondered what it was from since that very first listen, yet, I never really bothered to do look...
I'm glad I decided to track it down this week, it's a pretty cool a song from the mid 70's by R&B / Disco artist Peter Brown. I'm not sure if many people who don't know the sample, will enjoy it as much as those who have, but I still think it's a pretty nice track either way. It's got this kinda cheesey disco psych sound that I really dig. I mean, just peep the synth! It was obviously just asking to be sampled!

This week here's a track from the latest Stones Throw Podcast - Stones Throw 2011 mixed by PB Wolf, which is 95% GOLD might I add, if you haven't got it, get it. Too many interetsting and promosing sounds to mention, but it's looking like a great year for Wolf and his gang this year!
This one track by The Stepkids particularly caught my ear, something a little different to the "Stones Throw stereo type", which I'm not even sure what that would exactly be, but, something I didn't really expect, either way, it's a very welcomed adition. Sounding half psych, half indie, and entirely enjoyable.

The Heliocentrics are stepping out leaps and bounds ahead of the universe. Collaborating with some of the greatest musicians and producing some of the most inspirational and liberating sounds of this modern era.
Straight from their work with Mulatu, The Heliocentrics have teamed up with ethno-musicologist and jazz enthusiast Dr Lloyd Miller!
I didn't know much about Lloyd Miller, but after seeing this clip a few months back, I knew we were in for quite the treat.

I had all but forgot about this release with all that's going on lately. But, when I was pleasantly reminded, I eagerly introduced myself to the sounds of this great collaboration, and just had to share it with you all.
I'm also sucker for eastern influenced music, hence why Yusef Lateef has always been one of my jazz favourites. I think that eastern jazz gives you such a journey, it sounds like nothing I ever heard growing up, and creates the perfect mood for your mind to escape to a mystical place as it floats through the rhythms and grooves.

This half an hour documentary has been gaining a lot of views over the past week, and for good reason! It follows two guys, Andrew Wonder (Videographer) & Steve Duncan (Urban Historian) around a pretty risky, yet incredibly interesting adventure through New York City. It's of quite a simliar vain to Dark Days , even down to the music by DJ Shaddow.
It's amazing what history and beauty can be hidding around your own city. I always love watching and listening to people who show a geniune passion what they do. Passion is the key in anything you do! Never forget it, or you'll live a half life.

BAKED NYE

Woah! What can I say... New Years Eve, it's one of those nights that the more anticipation and hype that surrounds it, the more likely it is to be a cruddy night, and it was for this reason, I didn't really know what to expect when I saw the gargantuan line up that was BAKED NYE.

With so many people playing, even with HudMo pulling out at the last minute with a broken leg, things had to be split into two stages, and with a few set time overlaps, picking who's set you wanted to see became quite an arduous task!

The two stage set-up was a bit like walking into a record store that you've never been to before, and seeing wax from the floor to the walls, crates spread out everywhere, and already hundreds of people getting their fingers dusty. Both extremely overwhelming and exciting at the same time. You don't know where to start, and when you do, you can't sit still because no matter how good the crate (room) you're digging (dancing) in, you can't help but think of what records (beats) might be lurking in another create.

I chose to ease in with Harmonic 313, as he was the only act I hadn't seen play before. But I only lasted about 15 minutes until the dub-step kicked in. I was hoping to hear a bit more of his more Hip-Hop sounds, so rather then be disappointed, the problem was easily fixed. DAM-FUNK was playing all but a stones throw away (sorry, couldn't help myself). The room was the true definition of a sweat box, DAM was maintaining the funk, like always, and the vibes were grooving hard.
The clock struck midnight to the sounds of analog synths and suddenly everyone seemed to disperse. The dance floor sat a little thinner, but the heat still lingering, we boogied on as DAM whipped out the Keytar, the true sign that the party was well and truly on in any mans language.

As it edged towards 12.30, I moved up towards the main stage as Flying Lotus was about to begin, the room was packed tight, and anticipation was in the air as he set-up his gear. It was about 3 years (I think?) since Flying Lotus played his first show in Perth and funnily enough, I was stood in the exact same place last night as I did 3 years ago. But this time he had Thundercat & Ronald Bruner Jr due to play along side him, and for this I was most excited. After about 10 minutes of what sounded like a mix between the Matrix and a few hundred pots and pans falling down an cement stair case (I'm sorry, but some of Flying Lotus, I just can't get into) I was about ready to stroll back over to catch the rest of Dam-Funk's set, as I thought it was going to be another "Come to Perth, play Dub-Step/D&B" affair. But, I I stuck around, I wanted to see his Live show, so I eagerly waited for Thundercat & Ronald Burner Jr to arrive on stage.
Minutes later, up the came, Thundercat rocking an feather head dress and Ronald with his sticks in hand. After a slow almost a little bland start, they really got things going, all three of them started to click and they got into a epic groove, songs blended and spliced into one another, the drums from Ronald where outstanding, dude is a beast! As soon as they dropped Infinitum, I was sold, it was worth every penny. I don't think I have boogied that hard in all year!? The Live versions of his studio tracks where incredible, all musicians killed it in their own right, and I say this with such glee, it was the first Flying Lotus show I've seen where he didn't just turn up the tempo to build the intensity, rather they slowly built an atmosphere and took the whole crowd on a journey until the point combustion!

After that, I was cactus! My legs were spent, ears were ringing, and my clothes body were soaked in a cocktail of beer & sweat. I simply couldn't go any more. I didn't catch much, if any, of Gaslamp's set, which kinda sucks, but having seen him play twice before, I won't lose any sleep. It really was a rad show on all points, the guys at MOVE always doing it well. I really just forogt that it was NYE for the most part and just enjoyed the music.
